About Boston Dynamics

Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 in Waltham, Massachusetts as a spin-off from the MIT Leg Lab. Ownership history: Google (2013) → SoftBank (2017) → Hyundai Motor Group (2021), which still owns them.

Three commercial products

1. Spot, Quadruped inspection

  • Starts at USD 75,000 for the base unit + USD 10K–30K for payload packages
  • Used in power plants, oil & gas, construction, security patrol
  • Customers: BP, Shell, ENI, Fluor, Hyundai, Ontario Power Generation
  • Competes with Unitree B2 (10× cheaper) and Deep Robotics X30

2. Stretch, Warehouse / palletizing (the one most relevant to manufacturing)

  • Mobile container-unloading and palletizing robot
  • Vacuum gripper + mobile base + 7-DOF arm
  • Handles up to 23 kg at 800 boxes/hour
  • Deployed at DHL (Atlanta), Gap (Tennessee), Mars (multiple sites)
  • Price ~USD 200–300K including software subscription

3. Atlas Electric (2024+)

  • April 2024: announced the all-electric Atlas (retiring hydraulic version)
  • Pilot deployment at Hyundai factories (Korea) starting 2025
  • Full bipedal, faster and more agile than the legacy hydraulic Atlas
  • Not commercially available, currently sold only to development partners

For Thai factories

  • Spot, order through Hyundai Thailand or regional distributors. Typical use case: power-plant inspection at SCG, Banpu, PTT
  • Stretch, not yet available in Thailand (focused on US and EU 3PL first)
  • Atlas, still R&D / pilot phase
